Beginning in January 2005, the Ohio Department of Mental
Health convened a Resiliency Workgroup of youth and family members to
define resiliency for Ohio's
children with mental health issues.
The definition of resiliency as accepted by the Ohio
Federation is as follows:
Resiliency is an innate capacity that when fostered and
nurtured empowers children, youth, and families to successfully meet life’s
challenges with a sense of self determination, mastery, and hope.
Beginning in January 2005, the Ohio

children with mental health issues. The following 12 principles report what
families and youth identified they needed to be resilient:

Competencies: Skills, Abilities, Talents

Maximize Expectations
Contribution & Participation
Hope & Optimism
Sense of Meaning & Joy
